The BERLIN ETHICS LAB for Responsible AI and Responsible Human-Machine-Interaction [2] is a cross-disciplinary laboratory at Technical University Berlin that addresses the societal challenges brought by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics. Together with scientists, engineers, social scientists and humanities scholars, activists, artists and citizens we develop innovative formats for research, education, consulting, and multidirectional exchange among all relevant stakeholders. The lab strives to analyze and negotiate shared values and norms that frame our engagement with emerging technologies in the digital society.

Progress in AI is often hailed as “transformative” or “disruptive” without immediate concern for its societal implications. As a technological breakthrough, AI techniques come with great potential, but also with great risks for social cohesion. AI raises sensitive issues with regard to data privacy, legal responsibility, regulation, bias and discriminations, among others. However, as development of these new technologies is primarily triggered by the private sector, ethical disputes should not be left to these actors alone but rather be held in the domain of public research and debate. We believe that it is the role of humanities scholarship in general and ethics, philosophy, legal studies and social sciences in particular to turn foundational research and innovation into processes of Responsible Research and Innovation.

Supported by a grant from the Berlin University Alliance, we are currently engaged in a  comprehensive process of co-designing and instituting the Berlin Ethics Lab. If you are interested in participating in this process or collaborating with the Lab, or if you simply want to learn more about our work, feel free to contact Mari Möller [3].
