Short Biography

Jess de Jesus De Pinho Pinhal is a research associate and PhD candidate at Technische Universität Berlin (Berlin Institute of Technology). They obtained an MSc in Physics and Computer Science from Telecom Physique Strasbourg in 2012, a Bachelor of Philosophy from the University of Nice in 2015, and a Master in European Business from ESCP Europe Business School in 2017. They have worked as an engineer at Amadeus, a consultant for Hannover Re and early-stage start-ups, and as an entrepreneur. Their research focuses on the nature of ethical behaviour in machines and humans. In particular, they study the field of Algorithmic Fairness from two perspectives. Firstly, they critic the discipline from a social justice perspective. Secondly, they investigate the formalisation of the concept of fairness it pretends to operate.
